What Doctor's Don't Tell You About Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the second biggest lady killer in the Western world. Most experts believe the causes are almost certainly to be found in the environment - particularly with the latest disclosure that most women with breast cancer have high traces of parabens in their breasts (Horm Res, 2003; 60 [Suppl 3]: 50). Some of the highest breast cancer rates are found in the US, where breast cancer strikes one in every nine women, and 40,000 Americans die of it every year.
The bare statistics seem frightening, and have been used by doctors to press-gang women into being tested for breast cancer as early as possible. In the US, screening for breast cancer has become a huge money-making industry - but what if the figures are wrong? What if medicine is seriously overdiagnosing as cancer a condition that is essentially harmless?
During the last 10 years, breast screening has been called into question largely over basic questions of accuracy. In fact, a growing number of experts believe that the advent of breast-cancer screening has created a problem where none may actually exist, labelling and treating many conditions as cancer which aren't serious or life-threatening.
The astonishing fact is that fully half of all cases of so-called "breast cancer" might not be cancer at all, but a harmless abnormality that will never progress to cancer. In some 40,000 cases in the US, women could be being wrongly treated for cancer.
What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer is a growth of undifferentiated cells in the breast area usually causing a lumpy tumor. However, the overwhelming majority - some 80 per cent of breast tumors - is not cancerous. The first stage of one type of cancer is believed to be when a milk duct or lobule is invaded by microscopic calcifications. Most of these are so tiny that they cannot be seen or felt, and are only detectable on a mammogram. The calcifications are believed to be the precursors of cancer, but they are not in themselves cancerous. Nevertheless, they are somewhat misleadingly called "carcinomas in situ" (CIS), which means "cancers in place." Doctors refer to the calcifications that occur in lobules as "LCIS" and the ones in ducts as "DCIS," which is much the more common diagnosis of the two.
Before mammography, DCIS was virtually unknown, but it now accounts for up to 50 per cent of breast cancer diagnoses. The conventional view is that identifying DCIS is a good thing as it picks up cancer in the early stages, thus enabling treatment to prevent the cancer from developing.
At least, this is the message given to patients, but some experts are beginning to question the whole philosophy.
"Doctors should make it clear that DCIS is not cancer; it is only a possible precancer," says Dr Eric Wiener, head of breast oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts.
The plain fact is that most DCIS does not become cancerous - a finding made by pathologists doing autopsies on women who had died of something else. Post mortems show that many women may have DCIS harmlessly in their breasts for years; it is only when DCIS spreads out beyond the duct (it is no longer "in situ") that cancer might begin. The problem is that doctors don't know what types of DCIS break out and become carcinogenic, or even how often DCIS turns into cancer. If left untreated, some DCIS will break out and cancer will develop. But these cases are by far the minority. Most DCIS causes no problems at all. Nevertheless, doctors almost universally recommend treatment, arguing that it is always "better to be safe than sorry."
Cancer statistician Dr Donald Berry, head of biostatistics at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, labels this "knee-jerk" medicine.
In the hard-hitting article "Epidemiology versus scare-mongering," UK cancer expert Professor Michael Baum attacked health professionals for scaring women into unnecessary treatment. Baum has 30 years of experience as a breast-cancer surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital and, in his view, if left untreated, as many as 80 per cent of all DCIS cases will never become cancerous (Breast J, 2000; 6: 331-4).
This is backed up by American research aimed at quantifying the true risks of DCIS. Cancer statistician Dr Virginia Ernster, at the University of California at San Francisco, looked back over the death statistics of about 7000 women who had been diagnosed with DCIS, both before and after screening had become widespread. She found that, before the advent of screening, only 3.4 per cent of the women died of breast cancer, with the figure dropping to 1.8 per cent after its introduction. In either case, the "risk of death was low," commented Dr Ernster (Arch Intern Med, 2000; 160: 953-8).
The usual treatment for DCIS is a combination of the three standard anticancer weapons - surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, often disparagingly dubbed "cut, poison and burn" by their detractors. Although DCIS is not breast cancer, its treatment regime is similar to what is given for the full-blown disease. Doctors will either recommend surgery to remove the so-called diseased part (lumpectomy) or even to remove the whole breast (mastectomy), followed by chemotherapy and/or radiation (Am J Nurs, 2001; 101: 11). Nevertheless, a recent review of the evidence by cancer expert Maryann Napoli came to a stark and dramatic conclusion: there is no benefit whatsoever from any conventional treatment for DCIS. Napoli, who runs the Center for Medical Consumers in New York, surveyed the US mortality rates in women diagnosed with DCIS, and found that just 1 per cent of them died from breast cancer - whether their DCIS was treated or not (Am J Nurs, 2001; 101: 11).
"Seventy per cent of women with a DCIS diagnosis are being overtreated and getting all the downsides of treatment - surgical scars, side-effects of surgery, radiation and tamoxifen," says Professor Susan Love, cancer expert at the University of California at Los Angeles.
All women need to be aware that what their doctor tells them might not be the whole story. When it comes to their health, women need to keep asking, "What is the research on this treatment? What are the other options? Where can I find more information?"

Pampering4life Healthier Product Spotlight: LeVive Juice

There are a number of beverages available on the market today which are being touted as antioxidant drinks, or energy drinks, or perhaps even both. It is sometimes difficult to know what these drinks contain, or what they should contain, or which one may be the right choice for you. Let's take a few moments to examine one in particular, and why you will want to choose it. The drink we will be looking at is the Le Vive antioxidant juice drink.

Le Vive has five of the most significant antioxidant ingredients known to man, often referred to as superfruits. The beverage consists of the acai berry, the goji berry, noni fruit, mangosteen fruit, and pomegranate fruit. These five fruits combine to give you a drink which is red in color, and tastes very good; if you have ever consumed any of the others, you know that not all of these drinks taste good. Other ingredients, such as triple filtered water and citric acid, are present in trace amounts (less than two-tenths of one percent). There are no fillers in this drink, and it is not watered down. Best of all, there is no added sugar, no high fructose corn syrup, and no artificial colors or flavors. This means that in each 26-ounce bottle, 25.948 ounces are pure fruit juice and extracts.

You probably recognize some of the individual fruits which are a part of Le Vive, which have well known benefits. For example, the acai berry alone has caused countless people to have more energy, lose weight, and effectively fight aging. The acai berry comes from the acai palm tree, which is found in Central and South America. It contains anthocyanins and flavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants. As is the case with any antioxidant, such as green tea, the acai berry counters the free radicals in your body, which are believed to be cancer causing agents.

Another fruit found in Le Vive is the noni fruit, which also has a lot of great health benefits. Noni is found mainly in Tahiti, but it grows in other regions as well, such as India, the Pacific Islands, and Puerto Rico. The noni tree is in the coffee family, interestingly enough, and noni has significant amounts of fiber and vitamin C. Many people who have consumed noni in some form cite increased energy, and the noni fruit is believed to encourage the flow of toxins out of the body's cells.

The other three ingredients-the goji berry, mangosteen fruit, and pomegranate fruit-also have many health benefits in their own individual forms. They are rich in nutrients and have been found to be highly effective in countering various illnesses. In the regions of the world in which these fruits are native, and thus more common, they have been used by the local residents for centuries in maintaining healthy diets and healthy immune systems.

Combined, these five superfruits create the highly powerful Le Vive antioxidant juice drink. Naturally, it has the combined benefits of all five fruits-fights free radicals, has anti-inflammatory properties, fights the aging process, encourages a healthy complexion, fights degenerative diseases, helps maintain joint flexibility, promotes healthy circulation and cardiovascular health, encourages healthy blood glucose levels, keeps your liver healthy, helps you maintain normal cholesterol levels, possibly even effective in preventing cancer. As you cannot find this beverage in stores, you will need to purchase it from independent Ardyss distributors. As if all of these benefits are not enough, you will be particularly pleased to know that it is less expensive than competing antioxidant drinks. Try some Le Vive today, and experience these benefits for yourself. With a money back guarantee, you have nothing to lose.

Still not sure about trying this fantastic drink? Just Google the benefits of these berries and you will see first hand just how much they play an important role in your health and wellness. Discover THE HEALTHY YOU get healthy 2011

A person can acquire all of the riches and power that the world has to offer, but without good health he really doesn't have anything!
Overall, the health of our society is deteriorating. The rates of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity continue to rise. Who is responsible for this health crisis? The government? The pharmaceutical industry? Fast food? New viruses? Antibiotic resistant bacteria? The cost-cutting approach of managed health care? No! We are all responsible for our own health. The level of health that we enjoy today is a direct result of the decisions that we made yesterday. And the choices we make today will affect our well-being tomorrow.
The key to good health is to act appropriately on good decisions. The good health most of us were born with is a gift, but it is a gift which requires maintenance and care. Health does not come in a bottle or pill. We must acquire the knowledge about what will maintain and promote good health and commit to making health-promoting and life-enriching choices.
True health is a balance of physical, bio-chemical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects.
Physical Health/Fitness
Physical health and fitness can be achieved through a program that balances endurance, flexibility, speed and power.
  • Endurance is listed first, because it increases the strength of the heart and thus its capacity to pump the blood that takes nourishment to the other organs of the body. As an added benefit, endurance training burns fat which leads to a leaner and healthier body.
  • Flexibility is achieved through stretching.
  • Speed and power are developed through vigorous exercises like weightlifting or sprinting.
Bio-chemical Health
Bio-chemical health refers to nutrient absorption and toxin elimination. Eight of the top ten causes of death in the United States are related to nutrition. The nutrients in our food become the building blocks for the repair and replacement of all of the cells of our bodies. If we don't use good building blocks, we can't build good cells. Without healthy cells we cannot build healthy bodies.
  • Nutrient absorption requires good digestion. Digestion can be improved by using digestive enzyme supplements and combining foods that digest at the same rate. If you can't absorb it, you can't use it.
  • Elimination of toxins usually follows when a wholesome natural diet is consumed. Additionally, two quarts of purified water each day helps to prime the elimination system.
Mental Health
Mental health can be defined as a feeling of inner peace with control of mental faculties. A person will experience inner peace to the extent that he feels that he is in control of his circumstances. Goal setting and daily planning sessions will help to organize what we can control, and thus enhance our mental health.
Emotional Health
Emotional health can be defined as the ability to stay strong in spite of difficult circumstances. We will all experience setbacks in life. However, it is not what sets us back that is important but rather how we respond to it
Spiritual Health
Spirituality can be defined in terms of one's own beliefs. Nearly all belief systems recognize a higher power and teach that we should treat others as we would like to be treated. Ancient scriptures teach that you should seek first the kingdom of God and all other things will follow.
These fundamental aspects help us all to achieve balance and excellence in the physical, bio-chemical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of life. We must remember that our good health is a gift for which to be grateful and a treasure to be cherished. We must take responsibility for ourselves and our bodies. We must be able to look into the mirror and remind ourselves that "Good health starts here."

3 Steps To Manifest The Life Of Your Dreams

You create your experience via your underlying beliefs - whether they are conscious or unconscious. If you're not conscious of your beliefs then you must make them conscious. As Carl Jung said, "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate." Or, as mystics will say, "Know thyself." This includes your beliefs.
Before you begin to manifest your ideal life, you must get clear on exactly what you want. Examine your desire from a mystic perspective. Is it something that would be of benefit to many people or is it a purely selfish desire? If you are attempting to manifest your desire at the expense of someone else, there will be a steep price to pay in the future. Remember, "As ye sow, so shall ye reap," so why saddle yourself with additional burdens? If your desire seems selfish, reframe it so that it's of benefit to others.
Once you are clear on exactly what you want, then it is a straightforward matter to manifest your desire. There are three steps:

  • Step 1. Visualize exactly what you want for 5 minutes per day. Let's say you want to go sightseeing in Paris. You may want to visualize the Eiffel Tower. Why 5 minutes? Because any longer and your mind will wander. Any shorter and you may not be fully fleshing out your vision.

  • Step 2. Put yourself in the picture, with detail and emotion. You have a clear view of the Eiffel Tower. But, if you don't visualize yourself in the picture, the universe will manifest your desire, but perhaps not in the format you anticipated. For example, you might get a postcard of the Paris skyline in the mail. To avoid any misunderstandings, picture yourself standing in front of the tower. What are you wearing? Are you there with your spouse or some new love interest? Add details, employing all your sensory data. You're eating a delicious croissant. The wind is blowing gently on a beautiful, sunny spring afternoon. You hear conversations en francais and you smell the perfume of the petite jeune fille standing near you. Don't forget to add emotion. Are you enjoying the taste of your croissant? Do you feel the joy of exploring a new country? Are you reveling in the sense of freedom as you travel the world? The more realistic you make it, the better.
  • Step 3 is very important. At this stage, focus only on the end result. Don't worry about how you get there. You can't possibly imagine all the ways that your goal might manifest, so don't limit yourself to people you know or the most obvious avenues to attain your goal. Let the universe worry about the details.
When you are done with your meditation, release it to the universe. Continuing to hold it in your mind will prevent its manifestation. You have to let go. To ensure you've let go, occupy yourself with a completely unrelated activity after you complete your meditation.
You're ready to go; but first, a brief note of caution. This is an extremely powerful technique, so keep in mind the old adage, "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it." An example, an acquaintance of mine was remarking on how lucky a friend of hers was to receive a $100,000 settlement for a personal injury she suffered. Within two weeks, my friend was involved in a moderately serious auto accident that left her with a bad back and a subsequent $50,000 settlement. Was it worth it? I don't think so.
To ensure that you don't manifest something similar, I recommend you close each meditation by saying, "If it pleases God, then so be it," or "If this is for my highest good, then so be it." This is an extra form of protection that will help you avoid needless headache.
Lastly, don't think that because you're busy visualizing you don't have to take any action on the physical plane. For example, if you're looking for a boyfriend or girlfriend, you can't just sit inside and visualize your ideal mate, you still need to get out. You must go about your business, but be alert to opportunities that the universe is presenting to you.
The Law of Attraction is the basic underlying principle at work here. If you're not manifesting what you desire then there are two possibilities: you aren't clear on exactly what you want or you're not aware of a certain belief, probably unconscious, that is contradicting your conscious desire.
So, manifest your dreams, the mystic's way!

Fat Grams: How Much Can You Eat Daily

First, you need to know how many calories you should eat each day. Once you know this, you can determine how many grams of fat and saturated fat you can eat without exceeding your limits for fat. These limits are 25% to 35% of calories from fat and less than 7% of calories from saturated fat.
Here are some general guidelines for the number of calories that may be right for you if you don't need to lose weight:
  • Less-active women and older adults: 1,600 calories
  • Most children, teen girls, active women, and less-active men: 2,200 calories
  • Teen boys, active men, and very active women: 2,800 calories
If you need to lose weight, you may need fewer calories. Your doctor or dietician can set an appropriate calorie level for you.
After you know how many calories you should have each day, you can use the chart below to determine how much total fat and saturated fat you can eat each day. Remember, these are average figures. This means if you have a day when you eat foods that are high in fat, you can balance it by eating fewer high-fat foods the next day. This idea is sometimes called fat budgeting. Also, these figures are for healthy adults. If you have heart disease, your doctor may want you to reduce your fat intake even further.

Here's how to use the chart. Look down the left-hand column until you find the total number of calories you should eat each day. When you find the right amount, look across to see:
  • how many of your calories you can get from fat
  • how many grams of fat this equals
  • how many of your calories you can get from saturated fat
  • how many grams of saturated fat this equals

How Much Fat Can I Eat?
Your Total Daily Calories Recommended Maximum Calories From Fat Recommended Maximum Grams of Fat* Recommended Maximum Calories From Saturated Fat** Recommended Maximum Grams of Saturated Fat
1,600 400 to 560 44 to 62 112 or less 12 or less
1,800 450 to 630 50 to 70 126 or less 14 or less
2,000 500 to 700 56 to 78 140 or less 16 or less
2,200 550 to 770 61 to 86 154 or less 17 or less
2,400 600 to 840 67 to 93 168 or less 19 or less
2,600 650 to 910 72 to 101 182 or less 20 or less
2,800 700 to 980 78 to 109 196 or less 22 or less
*By following this, you will get the recommended 25% to 35% or less of your calories from fat.
**By following this, you will get the recommended less than 7% of your calories from saturated fat.

After you know your limits, try this experiment:
  • Write down your limits.
  • During the day, read your food labels to see how many grams of fat and saturated fat you are getting. Remember, food labels tell how many grams are in one serving as defined on the food label. If you eat a smaller or larger serving, then you're eating fewer or more grams of fat. Write down the amounts of fat and saturated fat from each of your meals and snacks.
  • At the end of the day, add up the amounts to get a total for fat and a total for saturated fat. Repeat this experiment for several days, then look at your totals. Are you at or below your limits on most days? If so, you're doing well. If not, you need to try to cut some fat and saturated fat from your diet. You don't need to add up your actual fat intake every day of your life. But it's a good idea to do this when you begin making diet changes so you know where you are at the outset. This will also help you become more aware of serving sizes. Then do it again every few months as you make changes to see whether your eating habits are really improving.
